"Then you also know who killed Mr. Markin⁠—"

"I have a suspicion I believe is correct,” Annie answered. “But there are evidentiary loose ends to tie up. I can't make a case on a hunch. I need facts. The murder weapon remains a problem. And you’ll need to cooperate eventually, of course."

"How much time can you give me?" Janis's eyes welled up again, but this time, no tears fell. She was beyond tears. Now, all that was left was the business of it.

"A couple of days," Annie answered. "I believe, at that point, I'll have the evidence necessary to make an arrest."

"And you'll have to share the whole story, I suppose. Not just a piece of it."

"I don't believe it will make sense, otherwise," Annie confirmed.

"That's alright," Janis wiped her nose on her sleeve, almost relieved the facade was done. "It's been a long time coming."

"I'll show myself out," Annie said, making her way toward the front door. She paused before exiting. "Janis?"

"Yes?"

"You did the right thing. It was the wrong thing, in so many ways, but given the circumstances, it took quite a lot of courage. And, if it means anything," Annie looked away, wishing she could escape her own mind. "This is disappointing for me too."

"How so?" Janis asked, surprised.

"The envelope. The way you wrote the summons," Annie confessed. "It was personal, for me."

Janis's brow furrowed as she wondered what "personal" could possibly mean. But before Janis could seek answers, Annie called down the hallway. "Got a call! Time to move!"

As if by magic, Ethan emerged from the study, looking exhausted. Reggie appeared behind him, still offering financial tips.

"And don't forget about the black market, that's the place to look. All over the dark web," Reggie continued over Ethan's assurances.

"Super helpful," Ethan said as he darted toward the front door. He noticed Janis, still leaning against the sink, her face flushed. Before he could ask any questions. Annie opened the front door and ushered him out.

"We'll be in touch," she said only to Janis before letting the door close softly behind her.

Janis turned back toward the dishes in the sink, looking at them with a strange feeling of relief. They were a part of the life she was about to lose. She had dreaded this moment, but now that it had arrived, she was almost glad to have the chance to burn everything down and start again.

She stared at Reggie like she was seeing him for the first time.

"Can you finish the dishes? I need to go for a walk," she told him. Reggie's mouth dropped open, but before he could say a word, Janis had left, the back door clanging shut behind her.
